Music Videos Style and Techniques

In Concert and as live footage-

For Live footage i have chosen Bon Jovi- Wanted Dead or Alive. This video is made with live footage of Bon Jovi performing on the stage in front of all of their fans.

Narrative and Interpretive-

For Narrative i have chosen to use the song by Train- 50 ways to say goodbye. This music video uses the songs lyrics to make the music video in which when the singer says each way the person died the music video then has a scene showing this off. This is a very good music video to show a narrative story with an ending that surprises the viewer and the characters within the video.
For interpretive i have chosen to use the song Something good by Alt-J. This song is made in a way in which it sounds similar to some of the latin music around the world with the instruments used to make the backing track. The video then focuses on a man in a ring with a bull in one of these latin countries as he doesn't realise he has been beaten until it's too late.

Surrealist-

For Surrealist i have chosen the song Kids by MGMT. This is a video that has shocked many viewers around the world when they watched this as they were not expecting what this video is compared to when they listened to the song on its own. The reason for me chosing this song is because there are not many like it. This video takes viewers into the mind of the child in the video. This young boy has been taken out for the day with his mum, but when seeing adults he doesn't see actual people, he sees them as monsters trying to hurt him.

Impressionist-

Impressionist videos do not try to follow the standards of what the lyrics say and instead they try to capture emotion from the viewer. The song i have chosen for this is Taro by Alt-J. This video shows emotion through the video by showing how people in Africa live everyday. This is a very heart warming video as its not trying to upset the viewers, in fact its showing the people of Africa going about their days, having fun and being happy with what small things they have.

Synergy-

Synergy videos are made alongside other things like films and tv shows. For this i have chosen See You Again by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth. This song was made for the 7th installment of the Fast And Furious franchise called Fast 7. In this video its all about how Paul Walker died and that he has now gone off to a better place where Vin Diesel will one day go and see his friend again.

Animation-

For animation i have chosen the song I'm blue da ba dee by Eiffel 65. This video is a solely animated video of a blue alien. This shows off animation very well as it is all animated for the purpose of the song. each thing within the video links in to the lyrics of the song.

Lip Synch-

For Lip Synch i have chosen Coldplay's song The Scientist. This video shows the singer Lip synching his entire song as the video plays backwards. The one problem is that it doesn't quite match the dialogue some of the time which caused a lot of viewers to not like the video when they watched it. But this is still one of the best examples of the performer Lip Synching to one of their songs.

Editing-Cutting to the beat-

For cutting to the beat i have decided to choose Ariana Grande's song Dangerous Woman. This video is a slow paced one which cuts each shot to the beat of the song. This is a very good example of Cutting to the beat as it's not too fast paced and keeps the viewer interested all through the video.

Post Production Visual Effects-

For this i have chosen the song Vodoo by Nick Jonas. This video features a lot of Post Production Visual Effects as it uses some different ways editing and overlapping the video with colorful lines and streaks making up different looks on the characters within the video.

Split-Screen-

For Split-Screen i have chosen the song We Don't Talk Anymore by Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez. This song features the two characters going about their life at the same time while in different parts of New York City. This is one example of an interesting editing technique in which t doesn't cause the editor too much hassle in putting the parts together.

Chroma-Key-

For this i have decided to use the song Earthquake by Labrinth and Tinie Tempah. This video uses chroma key alot in the way that he has speakers set up around him in the air moving about to the bass of the song. Chroma Key is a more technical term for the use of a green screen to make backdrops and visual effects around the artist during the music video.

The Purpose of The Music Video

Music Videos are something that we've all come to love over our lives.During this essay i am going to be discussing the purpose of music videos and why so many people love them. They weren't always the same as the ones we have today as they only first came around in 1941 when the Panoram Soundie came around. It was a new version of the classic jukebox that would play short clips along with the music.  By 1981 we had the original version of the TV channel MTV release that played music videos for 24 hours everyday. Now we have many different versions of this channel and other ways to stream music videos online for our own entertainment.

Promotion

One of the main things we see music videos doing is promoting the artist. This can be done in a number of different ways. first of all it will usually be done by just having the band or the artist featured in the video. This helps promote the artist as the audience watching the video is only watching it for the artist then. One band that does this quite well is The Kooks with their music video for Junk of the Heart. This video promotes the band as it only features them within the video. A lot of different musicians use music videos to promote themselves or a new style that they are taking on and they want the audience to notice. But these videos can also be used to promote someone behind the scenes like the director. For instance one director that was promoted through music videos was Michel Gondry as he directed Fell in Love With a Girl and also done it for other artists such as Daft Punk and Radiohead.

Producers Strategies

Producers will use many different ways to publicize different bands or artists. Mainstream artists such as Calvin Harris will have lots of publicity and money behind them which will become evident in their music videos as they will be able to have glossy effects and loads of different forms of CGI to attract more people to their video. This is clearly evident in Calvin Harris's song My Way and its music video. You can tell its got these effects in the video when there is a man standing in the middle of loads of red screens. Also they use drones to get shots of landscape in the video so this is another factor that shows they have an extremely high budget for this video.

Whereas independant bands/ artists who are just starting out will usually have to use their own money and cannot afford to front a large scale production for the video so instead make one that they can afford which doesn't ever look as good as the mainstream videos that people produce with larger budgets. A band which i looked at for this was Fun, before they became very popular they had a few original songs released like their song Walking The Dog and the music video which was produced primarily by them.

Extending Artists & Record labels income

An extension of income happens when an artist releases their music on more than one platform, so if their music video is being shown on TV the artist is going to gain royalties which is money for each time the video is watched or the song is played. This is done by artists when they release their song on multiple platforms, so if they originally released the song on soundcloud and then have it come onto spotify and YouTube they are going to be making more money than they would have done if it was only on soundcloud. For this i chose 'Empire of the Sun's song We Are The People. The reason i chose this is because the song was released on multiple platforms, for instance it first released on soundcloud and then moved onto YouTube and spotify. After about 3 weeks they had their song playing on TV every few hours and on the radio in the charts every day. They then got an even larger amount of income as they got paid by EA (electronic arts) to have their song in the Fifa soundtrack and it was then released again in a soundtrack album for the game which made a considerable amount of income due to the player base of the game being so big and all the fans wanting to listen to this song more.

They even used this song to make a slogan for the game as they were showing trailers for Fifa 14 they used the songs name and mixed it to make the slogan "We are Fifa 14".

Synergistic Marketing-

Synergistic Marketing is where a song and music video has been made to go along with a certain film that has or is going to be released. Its not always just for films but primarily is done for them. Disney are one of the biggest studios that do synegistic Marketing for songs as they nearly always have their own songs in the films they release and then release a soundtrack for the film. For instance one example i have for them is Frozen, this film is one of Disney's biggest money makers and the soundtrack made a very big revenue from it. One of the songs in the film called 'Let it Go' made it to number one in the UK hot 40 for about three or four weeks in a row which made them a much bigger amount of profit than they ever expected it would have made.
The music video i have chosen for this part is "Sucker For Pain" This song was made in synergy for the 2016 movie Suicide Squad by Twenty One Pilots. this song released before the movie hit cinema screens, this got people even more excited for when the film was hitting the screens and also due to it being such a big film this song hit 19,000 downloads sold in the week ending Feb. 16

The East Norfolk Pastoral Services Corporate Video Analysis

Camera Use

Throughout this video we used a number of different filming and editing techniques the first one that i am going to analyse is our camera use (such as shot types and camera angles). I feel that we done this very well as each of our shot types were consistent with our film and done in a interview style of a medium shot which means that you can see the top part of the body on all the actors. Each of our camera angles were mostly consistent in the same fashion with there being a few that were a bit different or not how they should have been. We also used a shallow depth of field in each of our interview shot to focus the camera lens on the actor and have the background slightly out of focus. The only problem we had with a few of our shots was that they were out of focus and had to be re-shot a number of times and then edited to make them more in focus. As you can see in the shot with Ellie (yellow top) the shot was fairly out of focus and we couldn't do anything to prevent that. We tried re-shooting the shot and it just came out being out of focus again. This was one of the big problems we had but we worked around that.

Editing

I felt that our transitions worked well in the sense of a corporate video not moving too fast or too slow. they were just about right with the time that they had. Maybe some of them went on for a bit too long, but they worked well within the video. The titles were well done with them having a white background and the titles all being in white. this worked as it was able to make the questions more noticeable for the audience. The final thing within the video from the editing was the graphics. The graphics we used were a small addition that made our video show the East Norfolk log so that the audience would be able to know that each of the interviewees were either part of the college staff or student body.

Sound

With the sound i feel that it all went extremely well as we did not have to do any editing to the dialogue volume as it was all clear after being shot. The only editing that we had to do to the sound was after we added our music to the video, we had to find the right sound levels so that the dialogue wouldn't cancel out the music. But also so that the music wouldn't be too loud over the dialogue so that we can still hear both the music and the dialogue.

Mise-en-scene and Lighting

The Mise-en-scene for our video was very well done in my opinion. We didn't have any props that were needed to be added into the set. But our setting was quite well done as it looked like an interview type of shot thanks to the actors being placed a small distance away from the camera while still not being too far away. The lighting within our video worked very well as it was made to attract people to the college, so we used high key lighting that is used to draw in attention from the audience and keep them interested.

In conclusion i feel that the video went very well with everything and worked to serve the purpose it was made for.
